you 'might' have a virus that's stopping McAfee from loading this way (by deleting/renaming the Autoexec.bat file - or it's entries). More details and answered questions are needed

Firstly - is this related to your Scanreg /restore problems from the otherr thread??
are you trying to install Win98 from CDROM?
could use a Win98 Boot floppy (bootdisk.com and others have them for D/l) to boot to A:\> (choose start WITH CDROM Support).. press ENTER after each command

is the forward slash not appearing? as in broken key on keyboard? (yet it works in windows?). Make sure you keep a blank space before the [/] character, as it appears you have
if you find C:\>DIR to work and show you the contents of C:\ like micker377 says - you could Boot from a Boot floppy...
since you're "ashamed" - I ain't helpin.....but anyway I know nothing about activesync crud

that's a Forward slash, not a Backslash
Basically Backslashes are used for changing DIR and DRIVES...where as Forward is for switches after a command.
where in the command do you need a backslash?

Right click My Computer >> Performance Tab - are any drives listed as running in MSDOS Mode? if so continue below;
Reboot in Safe Mode (have mobo CDROM and 98 CD handy) - and remove the Busmaster IDE Controller in Device Manager and reboot.
Also - see this and use it if...
Reboot into DOS and run Scandisk
then Safe Mode and Scandisk
Cleanmgr.exe is the cleanup utility accessed from within Explorer when right clicking a drive.
You may have a nasty virus

He's got a helper using Remote Desktop directly behind you - it's a colusion i tell ya - and a dang funny one at that....
try hitting his solenoid with a hammer - see if that fixes it
