    open ports on XP machine

Appreciate the analogy. That is making sense now. Last question, I promise. You mention port 445 for instance is one hacker like to get into. How would they get into it? I have used tools to be able to tell that one is open but what do you do from there? Obviously I'm not a hacker but just...

    open ports on XP machine

Thank you. Just to clarify. If I've got 2 PCs on the LAN and I turn off the firewall on PC1 and there is NOT and SSH Server running. Now on the PC2 if I do a "telnet <PC1> 22" it will not be able to connect because nothing is listening on the port even though it is wide open. Sound right...

    open ports on XP machine

BadBigBen, So if I have COPSSH server running on the box and set it to run on port 22 (default) for instance which then makes that port turn to listening I still could not get it to show that it was open. Just curious, if that's the case that all ports are closed unless they are listening...

    open ports on XP machine

I am trying to figure out how to open more ports on an XP machine I am running COPSSH server on. I have basically turned off the XP firewall all together so that port 22 would be open. (when it works, later i will turn the fw back on and make 22 and exception or whichever port i choose but now...

Putty, SSH server and Remote Desktop

I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. My goal is to access data from at my home (remote PC) from work. I think I have the general idea but need a little help. Does any of this sound right? At home I have a D-Link router, Do I need to port forward port 22 on the router...

    telnet question

Thanks North323, Instead of telnet, if you want to use the cli on your devices by using SSH, is Putty an example of a tool that allows you to get to your devices and configure them? So i'm guessing in your putty configuation you put in the IP of your device and the port you want to go in thru...

    telnet question

Now adays instead of telnet a lot of the appliances use web based gui interfaces so it is not used as much? Can someone give me examples of how they use it or used to use it? I guess you could also use it to see what ports are open on a machine? If you run telnet and get the black screen you...

    telnet question

Just trying to find an answer on how telnet is used. I know you run it from the command line telnet <ip address> <blank for port 23> or <other port number>. When I run it from my XP machine to another PC's open port, it takes me to a black screen with my cursor. I know that means I am on that...

Able to Ping host names without DNS installed, how is it working?

Thanks. So basically in a small LAN, within the same subnet, if you don't plan to get out to the INTERNET then NetBIOS is all you need to resolve hostnames to IPs of PCs. If you are in a large LAN and don't want all the broadcast out there on there then DNS is better because it it unicast to the...

Able to Ping host names without DNS installed, how is it working?

Thanks burtsbees, I guess my questions is how am I able to ping another pc in the network by its PC name if I don't have a DNS server in the network telling it that this hostname goes with this IP address? Is this something with NetBIOS which runs by default so when the PC broadcasts out that...

Able to Ping host names without DNS installed, how is it working?

Probably a simple question for most... I have a small SOHO setup. Cable Modem --> D-Link Router --> 2 PCs networked together using TCP/IP I am just curious how it is letting me ping from one PC to the other by using the HOST name of the PC. I know pinging the IP should work but how can it...
