Sorry for the long delay in this posting !!! I have eventually contacted HP and requested a set of 'System Recovery' disks (7 in all) and after backing up my essential information, have now a full working computer. As a point of interest Hewlett Packard supply these disks free so perhaps other...- sellewe

Thanks for your suggestions. The Q269244 refers to the help file not shutting down which is the opposite to my problem and I do not know anyone using Windows 2000. I have tried the Microsoft site but my problem there is that they ask for the Product ID and to find this I need to open the...- sellewe
