Compaq DLT drive I/O write error?!

had one of those happen to me.... drive got all funky, wouldn't eject the tape... etc... had to replace the drive. Another thing to ensure is that the drivers you are using on your controller card (assuming it's a scsi tape device) is that you have good drivers. Mark

Are you sure all the slots are not specified as "CLEANING SLOT" Open BackupExec, click the "devices" tab, hilight "slots", right click one of the slots that should NOT be a cleaning slot, and choose "properties", is the "cleaning slot" checkbox...

    device off-line

PS: to get it back online (temp fix) stop and restart the backup exec services.... oh and one more thing.... if this tape drive is the only one you use for backups, disable the removable storage service in the "services" applet. this takes care of the NTBACKUP that is native to...

    device off-line

I have also had this unfortunate experience. If the drive is a SCSI tape device, check with your system manufacturer to get an upgrade for the SCSI controllers that take care of the tape drive. This was the case with Dell's systems anyway. Another thing to try would be shut down the server...

Is cisco certification the way to go?

For what it's worth, I passed my CCNA and thouroughly enjoyed the class. Definately not a waste of time. Where else can you play and experiment with a dozen or so routers and not get fired if you totally mess up the configuration :) Mark

dns error when trying to e-mail a certain person

I think it works with '98.... although I'm not 100% sure. Reading back on Chris' comments, I think he's right though. If you can send to other addresses from that PC, it can obviously find the mail server. Won't hurt anything though. My appologies Chris. Mark

dns error when trying to e-mail a certain person

This is true iproute, I meant that the client machine would look up the address of the SMTP server. Which should have a static IP or a reservation in DHCP. If for some reason the SMTP server is a DHCP client, then this machine may have gotten confused. Mark

    Mail clients time out

If these clients are downloading from a dialup or otherwise very slow connection, it will hang, or appear to hang on large messages. The only thing you can do is to limit the maximum size of the messages, or if your are running exchange and have OWA enabled, they can access it through a browser...

dns error when trying to e-mail a certain person

Dunno if it will work, but you can open a command line window (DOS) and type c:\>ipconfig /flushdns This command will flush the DNS resolver cache and may force the system to look up the valid address. The fact that you can send to that same address from another pc means that the problem is...

What are your recommendations for a Blackhole DNS server?

I was just thinking this morning about a symantec solution to this. I will look into the software and then have a closer look at the recommendations for which servers to choose. I'll post my oppinion (whatever it's worth) soon. Give me a few days to reply to this.... it is one of the...

What are your recommendations for a Blackhole DNS server?

Well Steve, I don't know yet.... What software did you find to tie in to the DNS servers? maybe we can collaborate on a solution :) Mark

    Blackhole DNS servers.....

If I understand correctly, you have to configure your mail server to perform a reverse lookup query on one of those servers. The URL a couple of posts up lists many of these servers, some are free to use, some are not. I was looking for advice on which to pick.
