You should boot safe mode and remove the devices you tried to update. When you reboot to normal mode, either instal new drivers if you have them, or cancel until you get new drivers to update
I've seen this as a problem with the Start bar. I stretched the start bar full open, then full close, then to normal one line and the IE window was back to normal
Make sure the filename ext is XLS It sounds like you might be using a addin that is not registered with file types<br>
If it is not .XLS Then go to Windows Explorer, View, File types, and register the new Ext to Excell
