I've put a comment in one of the other threads on this topic. You need to have the laptop connected to an active LAN, otherwise IIS fails to start and you can't connect to CM with a browser. CM is running but you can't browse to it.
Installing on a generic PC - this should always work:-
1)Install W2000 Server from Microsoft CDs - do not use the Cisco CDs.
2)Install W2000 Service Pack 4
3)Install SQL2000 from Microsoft CDs - do not use Cisco version
4)Install SQL Service Pack 3A - this may not be necessary as the Cisco CM...
