SMS still inventories using the profile of the SMS service account. So, for network printers and such, it will inventory those devices listed under that profile (which usually means there are no such devices installed under that profile).
You can do a bit of a workaround to get the inventory...

Not necessarily a common issue to SP5, but generally a common issue for Windows XP and Windows 2000 computers where local policy is overiding domain policy. Check the local computer policies and make sure there's nothing wrong there.
