Yes, PageMaker 7.0 comes with a Quark Xpress 4.1 converter. It also comes with Distiller which would allow you to create a PDF out of Word (Just print to the Acrobat Distiller printer)

If you are referring to the template pallette then there is a checkbox that should say something like, "Show this windows next time PageMaker opens" Check that box and next time PageMaker opens, the template windows should not be there.

What kind of fonts are they? What does the icon look like? Most fonts in the newer Operating Systems will be able to be installed in the Fonts Control Panel. But in older OS's like Windows 95/98/ME, in order to install Type 1 fonts, you must download Adobe Type Manager from http://www.adobe.com...
You can also get a full list of the characters with a PageMaker template that is included with 6.5 and 7.0, I'm not sure if it's included in PM 6.0. The template is called charset.pmt. Do a search for it in your PM Extras folder and open it in PageMaker, then follow the instructions.

I also agree that it is not the best workflow to use a JPEG. Tiff's are far better for print output. It's just that I stumbled on that feature and found out it was a transparent JPEG and had no idea how it was being accomplished, but thought I'd at least share it with everyone.

Go to Start, Run, type regedit. Then browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, Software, Adobe, Media Browser. On the right hand side should be a Plugins key. Delete it.
If this does not work, pull out the pictpal.add and scrptpal.add from C:\Program Files\Adobe\PM65\RSRC\Usenglsh\Plugins
