To TekTippy4U: Many thanks for the suggestion. I have sorted them by creation date, and deleted all except the most recent six files, as a precaution. The system reboots correctly and I have now turned 'System Restore' back on Thank you for your support RJPH

To dbMark: Many thanks for your speedy reply. I have looked at my System Restore properties - because the available disk space was less than 200Mb the System Restore was already 'disabled'. I rebooted the system which freed up lots of space so now I have set System Restore to 'disabled' again...
