maxdsiz is set at the default of 64 MB. I will increase it and see if that resolves the problem. As it is a live 24x7 system it is hard to find a time to reboot. A lot of negotiation with users, but I will try to schedule the changes for tonight. Thanks for your help. If any other ideas...
Have a look at mpack. It is a utility to mime encode files. We are using this to automatically email excel spreadsheets to clients from an ERP system. If you want more info get in touch.

I am have a major problem backuping up a HPUX 10.20 server using fbackup. The machine is a D330 with 512 MB RAM and 3 GB swap. The backup is kicked off by cron every night. It runs for about 60 - 90 mins and then

Assuming you have a tftp server running on a computer on your network the process is quite straightforward. If you do not have tftp server running there are a number freely available on the interent that run under windows (Cisco have one).

You probably have a tcp/ip setting wrong somewhere, possibly a subnet mask. The subnet mask on the linux machine is probably different to the subnet mash on the other machines.

Step 1
Add user oracle to /etc/cron.d/cron.allow
Step 2
Login as user oracle
Step 3
create a crontab file with cron entries you want to run
Step 4
Issue the command
crontab cronfile
Everything is now set. cron mail will go to user oracle

The first question is why would you want to do this, there are other ways of allowing users run selected commands as root.
If you have some overriding need to do this create a user with a user ID of 0 and he will be equivalent to root. This is what gives the root user root privledges. Unix works...
