We have similar problems with Seagate LTO drives. One workaround is, to poweroff the unresposive drive, and after a poweron it will rewind and eject the tape. Then you can unload the tape, and you backups run with full speed again.

We have a similar Problem:
Backup worked fine, but after some months (10 monts?) one node of the Win2k Cluster failed. All virtual hosts at the clusternode failed too. A reboot of the clusternode fixes the Problem. But some days later the other node fails -> reboot, works -> other node...
I use a script (Bash, UNIX). The core element of the script is:
SSETS=`mminfo -q "level=full,!incomplete,copies=1,pool=$MPOOL" -r ssid`
This writes all valid savesets withaout clone in the $SSETS variable.
nsrclone -b "$APOOL" -S $SSETS
Does the cloning.
You must set $MPOOL...
