Openoffice.org's office suite has a good powerpoint style program and there is a Desktop publishing thingy more along the lines of quark (i think) but i can't remember the name. All i remember is that it was reviewed in a copy of LinuxFormat magazine.....maybe their website might archive it...

I might be wrong, i haven't used RH8 in a while, but i'm fairly sure there's a way to configure the login screen (GDM)......scout through the menus (prefrences somewhere?) for something to configure login screen :-)

You need to edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config file. Look at the XFree86 homepage (google will find it for you) for some examples and help. :-)

1) you can untar anywhere.....if you install correctly everything will be where it should be 2) X11 (or X or XF86) is the graphical server for Linux. You don't need to download specifically for X. If it's a linux program it will probably be for X anyway. 3) Try http://freshmeat.net

Check out a program called apt-rpm (based on debians apt-get) it solves all dependancies for you and installs perfectly
