Openoffice.org's office suite has a good powerpoint style program and there is a Desktop publishing thingy more along the lines of quark (i think) but i can't remember the name.

I might be wrong, i haven't used RH8 in a while, but i'm fairly sure there's a way to configure the login screen (GDM)......scout through the menus (prefrences somewhere?) for something to configure login screen :-)
1) you can untar anywhere.....if you install correctly everything will be where it should be
2) X11 (or X or XF86) is the graphical server for Linux. You don't need to download specifically for X. If it's a linux program it will probably be for X anyway.

Sounds weird though becuase RH8 has got a 2.4+ kernel from install and should have no problem with any of your hardware (except maybe the audigy)

Try a media player called 'Xine' it runs all sorts of movie files including VCD's (have succesfully done this myself)
