it's a Cisco 295O Series and no VLANs yet. I did find the problem the way my co-worker set up the VPN was interfearing with the old network settings. Thanks for your time,

yes they should be correct here is what i have
server 1 (old)
192.168.1.50 subnet mask 255.255.254.0
server 2 (new)
192.168.0.20
i have also tried (on the new server)
(all having a subnet mask of 255..255.254.0
192.168.1.20
192.168.1.51
to name a few
i am pinging using the IP, and yes they have the addresses
server 1
192.168.1.50 subnet mask 255.255.254.0
server 2
192.168.0.20 subnet mask 255.255.254.0
on the second server i have also tried IP addresses like
192.168.1.20
192.168.1.51
and others.
