CommonNames it was. Downloaded and installed the toolbar from www.CommonNames.com, then unstalled it. Voila, net connection restored to perfect working order. Fortunately I hadn't tried formatting yet, but that was still a pain. Evil. -

Ahhh, I'm pretty sure this is the problem with my home network as well. I've tried everything else suggested for problems like this with no luck. Any ideas on how to remove and reinstall TCP/IP in Windows XP (as it won't let you uninstall it)? And an address of who to kill at CommonNames? Heh.
