Try to open that file with a text editor. If you see text, it's probably a PostScript file; try to "print" it directly to the printer, and it will format the hard drive.

makkid, you seem to be an experienced tech on this. We have a 850. I have some spare small (1-2Gb) SCSI/IDE harddisks, and would like to enhance our printer by adding one. I guess it takes an IDE disk.
I guess the disk needs to be formatted in a certain way? maybe with a postscript program...

Thanks for answering! I got this printer service manuals and finally got a clue. I simply removed the sides (as you have suggested) and blowed all the dust and debris; tried it, and... about 1000 pages afetr is still working!
