Strange problem...Windows XP Home Ed...Last couple of days when double clicking on any desktop icons or trying to open My Computer or Control Panel, the desktop just refreshes itself and won't open anything.
This is followed by an error saying the Active Desktop has been refreshed (basically...
Has this problem just started? Or has it been doing this for awhile?
I've seen keyboards do strange things as you describe, but a restart of the computer has fixed the problems more often than not..
If not, try a different keyboard. (Is it USB or a PS2?)
Hi Guys.
My Pc has 1 CD-RW drive, and 1 CD-ROM drive.
Just recently both have been giving me problems, and both at around the same time.
The CD-ROM will not read discs at all, the LED on the drive lights up when a cd is put in, but it will not read it.
And if you try and access the drive from...
You could also try the following site for an spyware scan.
www.ewido.com
Try, the online scan. Or Download and run the trial version.
This helped me recently to get rid of a nasty Freeprod Toolbar infection, amongst other crud on my system.
After the scan, everything has been running fine.
Sounds like a faulty power supply to me, i had a similar issue a while ago.
Do the fans start and then just stop? Or do they run continously until you power the system off?
Mon0L1th - $15 for a new keyboard isn't an issue at all, i have a TON of extra keyboards lying around. I just wanted to see if i could get this working.
Edfair - Check underneath what? The keyboard? What would this PC/AT switch look like?
Also, would a BIOS update possibly help this situation?
Hi Guys.
I've got an older style 5 Mini Pin Keyboard, (It's like 14-15 years old..) anyways, just for the sake of trying i bought a 5 Pin to 6 Pin PS2 Keyboard converter, in hopes of getting it working on my Pc.
But its giving me grief..It picks up the keyboard when i start up the pc (the lock...

Until now, One machine is now not picking up the USB signals from either the keyboard or the mouse...
Other machines attached to the KVM switch are working fine.
Now this computer WAS working...
Just to close up this thread.
I ordered a new floppy drive, specific to the computer model (dc 7100) from HP, and i installed it no problems.
Just a freaky coincidence that the power supply decided to die on my i guess..
Anyways, thanks guys for all the information!
Everything is working no...
Its the whole computer that is a couple of days old, but i got a replacement power supply from HP and everything is stable now..
Still haven't tried to install a floppy yet, i'm kind of leery about trying one of these old dinosaur floppys i have lying around..
I'm likely going to order one...
I had a similar problem awhile ago, the system would restart just before the login screen.
Problem was the locally installed USB 1020 Laserjet Printer, i had to physically disconnect the USB cable to get the restarts to stop, afterwards i reinstalled the driver for the printer and everything...
Good point, about the voltage switch.. However this power supply dosent have one.
And no there wasn't any charred/burning of any kind, the fans would just spin for 2 seconds then stop... However if i held down the power button, the fans continue to spin continously (at a low speed) but the...
Thanks again for your replies.
I was 99% sure on the Floppy drives not making a difference, but just wanted to make sure.
That being said, i'm still scratching my head as to what went wrong here... I've worked in IT for just over a year now.. (Still relatively green, but learning new stuff all...
