I experiance that problem about once in every 3 months.
This is the procedure that seems to work for me.
1) Stop all BE services.
2) Power off backup device
(In my case ... Sony AIT TSL-SA300C Autoloader)
3) Open BE and assure that drive goes offline - Dont start services...

Then this morning, Our backup device didn’t restore anything after an hour so I cancelled it.
Then I tried to run a inventory but that just failed hopelessly ...

Dude ... The fact that you are doing it remotely has nothing to do with it. Check the logon credentials of the services.
Now that you changed the admin password ... You are going to have to edit all the services that used the admin account to startup.
Do this by
Start > Run > type...
In the device manager ... Have you tried scanning for hardware changes? It pretty much redetects devices and configuration.
Once Done ... What happens?
And what about Veritas? Have you contacted them? If so, what did they suggest? (Just to see what they're thinking :)
I also think tony may be onto something ... Have you tried changing the cables? Or SCSI controller?
