ok i don't know whether this is a hardware or software problem, i'm leaning towards hardware, because i had the same problem while running Win98 then 2000 Pro then ME... XP is running a treat and i'm rather happy with it, dont'laugh at me, i'm happy so leave me be :-)

just a small suggestion, If what you are working on is important then make regular saves at big stages in your work, and don't over write the file, save it as something new so you have a history log of previous versions of your work...

thanks for the help, but we're working on a piece of software that needs the hdd serial no. so it can generate a unique authorisation code. this way, the software will not be able to be used on more than one screen... do you follow?

I'd have to agree with lgebhart... make sure your fan is working.
Make sure a cable or something isn't stopping the fan from spinning.
Also check under the little sticker on the fan for a little hole, if there is then just drip a tiny bit of oil in thier (preferably oil conditioned for...
I am having a similar problem with a work colegue's laptop... the problem with his laptop i think is that he has it set up as a workgroup. A workgroup is meant for peer to peer, and this might be stuffing up the connection or something. i'm not sure. Maybe your having the same problem?
