    You can use option -R to chmod recursively down through the sub-directories. Google man chmod. But make sure you start down at the highest directory you actually want to change. It won't ask you twice.

    I agree with stefanwagner - I don't think you'll will have much luck with your approach for anything except basic text. I can take the same Word document and print to different printers and see a lot of differences even in Windows. If it is a final document, a better (but not perfect)...

    I don't know the answer, but a Google search turned up this bug notice: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/569372 I would suggest unplugging the DVI connection to the TV - simplify the system as much as possible and see if you can get it to boot.
