Hi Tim, my company specialises in small business solutions. It's a question Iget asked a lot and there's no definite answer to be honest. You can read many an article that sya that SBS and on site servers etc are dead in the water, but there are plenty of arguements against this.
For example, if...

Have a look at this:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc788073(WS.10).aspx
It talks about 2008 in the article but was definitely around in 2003 and maybe...
What is this folder for? Is it a home folder for th euser to store his/her documents in?
If so, then you can set the path in their user profile in AD, when the user logs in, it will create a folder with the correct permissions.
If it's for something else, let me know

It's funny when you say: "Don't understand how inept support companies survive. If I setup a backup system as they...

Sounds like your SQL Express has hit it's 4gb limit.

Right then... got it! Annoyingly, I've spent all day trying to sort it, and when the fix dawned on me, I remembered doing it years ago!!
On my 2008 R2 Print Server, I had set up a HP 6040f MFP with a x64 driver.
As you've done and said above, I'd loaded the 32 bit drivers onto the server...
