    The "right" development tools

Hi, Here's a link to what Oracle say in their statement of direction for Forms: http://otn.oracle.com/products/forms/htdocs/FormsSOD.html It includes the following statement: "In order to allow existing customers to upgrade their applications to Oracle9i Forms, Oracle Forms 6i will be...

Why my Oracle Designer runs so slowly?

I would recommend getting the advice of a good DBA, which I am not, but our system has more RAM for fewer users, so that may be something to look into. You should also look at the size of your tablespaces - although ours were set on auto-extend, they were frequently reaching the limits. This...

    The "right" development tools

Oracle support for Forms/Reports 6i will stop in December 2004. They are committed to moving to a Web based architecture. However, Forms and Reports 6i have been around for a while now and most of the bugs have now been identified and addressed. There is no reason why an application should...

    designer des6iRel4

According to Metalink no releases of Designer 6i are supported for Windows XP - the only supported versions are 9i. Not much help there. I know that the problems we had with Win 2000 were because you had to be logged in as THE Administrator - a user with administrator privilidges wasn't good...

Creating Entity Relationship Diagram with Des. 9i

Ed, I am assuming that 9i works in the same way as 6i. In Designer 6i if you open up the Entity Relationship Diagrammer tool with a new blank diagram there is an option on the Utility menu called "Table to Entity Retrofit". This tool looks at the table definitions in the...

Installing Dev2k (Forms 4.5) when 8i client exists

We've had problems with different versions of Oracle Installer. Our solution has been to install the oldest one first. To remove the installation of Oracle you can rename the %ORACLE_HOME% directory, export the key in the Registry called HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/ORACLE and then delete...

Showing a UK Map for a Grid Reference

We've developed a little function that others may find useful - no warrenty is supplied with this code, use it at your own risk. It converts a UK Grid Reference to Eastings and Northings data and calls MultiMap.com to display a map at 1:50,000 of the area around the point (highlighted with a...

Rich Text Format (RTF) View in MS WORD

It might help if you could describe what is going wrong. We've had a few problems with RTF files, mostly to do with orientation (i.e. defaulting to portrait) and margins. I don't have a fix for the defaulting to portrait problem other than to reset it in Word (you have to get the cursor out of...

    Developer 6i for Windows 98

You can install 6i against 8.1.6 but the installation scripts for the repository assumes that you are running 8.1.7 or higher. Oracle will put the 8.1.7 stuff in a different Oracle home - you have to manually tell Oracle not to use this but instead to use the 8.1.6 home. Patrick.

    Oracle UML

Designer 6i does not support UML natively. I have no experience of Rational, but I suspect that it would be able to help you. There were plans for Designer 9i to support UML and for it to be fully integrated with JDeveloper 9i, but these didn't seem to make it in the shipped product. Good...

Entering lookup via descriptor with LOV in Designer 6i

We've now been able to resolve our problem. We had include the table usage (just as you do in 6.0) as well as the list of values component. Thanks for your time. Patrick.

Entering lookup via descriptor with LOV in Designer 6i

We are struggling to recreate in 6i something we did routinely in 6.0, that is to have a text item with an associated LOV for entering a lookup. We don't want to display the foreign key, just the description. We have managed to achieve this with Poplists and Text Lists using the show meaning...
