You should be able to do this with some simple
grep and cut commands.
Can you even see the machine ping or anything? NO: check
network settings. Can ping should be able to at least
attach. YES: try to attach and see.

I agree with oceanid1. You need to remove all associations
with the nic before removing the nic. I found this out
when I was replacing a nic and couldnt use the ip till I
reinserterd the nic that was in and removed it's settings (set to dhcp). Then I could use the IP again.

Can you not browse to the "workgroup pc" and connect as?
All you should have to do is give it the username
and password. at worst you have to specify the workgroup name:
workgroup\username

reinstall tcp ip. I had it before. I had it last freakin week when I had to reboot a 2000 server each time I changed IPs on the thing. Reinstalled TCP/IP and all good again. (lab)

Get rid of the hub. You can have a 24port semi-managed
switch for $99 (not great but better than a hub)
If router 100 and hub 10 and no way for either to change
then it wont work.
