Took me 17 seconds to load it up, on a dial up (and not a fast one at that) connected at 45,33 bps.
IMHO, that's fast enough for me, although when I do get a T1, I'll probably find it too slow.
In you add a catchy preloader... It'll be even greater!

Adding scroll=no will just insure that, if you don't need it, no empty scroll bar will appear on the right. An empty scroll bar should normally appear even if your movie and the rest of your html display is smaller than the user's browser window.

Milk,
1- Yes, you can create a gradient with different alpha settings from one end to the other! Use the Mixer panel... That's why the alpha box is there!
2- See my post in thread250-100393, about your buttons.
3- Have a look at these... If this link will work for you...
IMHO, it's not very hard work to do a "cross dissolve" on two layers... As you described!
As for the buttons use frame labels rather than frame numbers...
So within your mc, to target a main movie frame, you would label it and use the following:
on (press) {
_root.gotoAndStop...
Yes! No problem!
Insert new layer on top of layer 1... While in button edit mode.
Set a keyframe on the down position.
Drag your mc, from the library...
Test it! Bingo!

On Flaskit you'll find FlashTyper:
http://www.flashkit.com/textfx/start.shtml
But that's like loading external swfs... And you can't import your text...
Type your text in layer 1... Bold font would be better.
Insert new layer.
Copy text from layer 1 to layer 2.
Back to layer 1. Apply Dartali's method... Convert into symbol. Set Alpha to whatever...
Back to layer 2. Select text. Break apart. Use Ink bottle Toll to outline your text... Just click...
