i have done about everything suggested. i reinstalled xp and updated windows. my startup remains at about 4.5 minutes. it usually hangs in 2 places. the "detecting ide drivers" and the screen with the xp logo. today, it hung so long at the xp logo that i had to restart. wasn't timing it but...

scared the crap out of me. i can tell you that.

the screen went crazy. the box with the advanced setting finally came back up and with 60 hertz again. and right now there is some kind of install going on with a &quot;reading package&quot;.

according to your link jamie, the refresh should be 75 hz. i am curious how it got at 60 with no other settings being recommended. but thanks very much.

unchecking leads to a warning that the setting cannot be displayed correctly and could cause hardware damage. the word that scares me is &quot;cannot&quot; not &quot;may not&quot;. ??
