Not sure how helpful this may be, I'm sure someone else here is more knowledgeable than I am regarding this... but maybe try using a FTP program like CuteFTP. http://www.cuteftp.com/

It depends on what OS you're using first of all. For example... if you're using 98, I don't think you can go past 512MB.... in fact even using 512MB on that OS could actually harm your performance depending on what type of RAM you're using.
I keep getting this 3 or 4 times a day and it ends up closing my browser and sendng my desktop into some "restore default" white page.... it's pretty annoying. I'm no software guru though and don't understand how to resolve this.

Now all of the sudden it wants to cooperate and it did work. We removed a file found in his startup folder and it resolved the issue. We did that earlier and it didn't do anything. Maybe it has a mind of its own. Thanks for the tip.

MS Excel 97 (as with all office programs) has a list of recently used files. It was my understanding that this stuff is written to the registry. Well, doesn't matter how often Excel opens up (and I'm assuming the other programs) but it doesn't save recently opened files under the File window...
