problem solved, i changed my power supply over from 1 that ran 3.3v 15amps to one that ran 3.3v 20amps and all is well
weird how it all worked fine on another motherboard with same equipment but i am happy now
learn something new every day
i forgot to mention the graphics card does work on other pc's and the problem seems to be specific between my MSI KT3 motherboard and Hercules 3d prophet 2 ultra gfx. other cards do work fine with the kt3 motherboard and it has been rock steady with an old voodoo 3 card (touch wood).

I have a similar problem with a Hercules prophet 2 ultra card, it doesnt reset but seems to go to permanant standby. The only way to boot up is to hold the power switch for several seconds and switch on again. This only happens when running 3d games.
