Configuring the scanner to save FSF files instead of xml.gz will almost certainly solve the problem. You can still get xml.gz files from the XML Enricher - and these should be encoded correctly.

You can define the Asset Number field as a File Extract field. This allows you to specify any file in the system as the source of the asset number.

I can help you with one of the items at least: In the new v7.0 of Desktop Inventory (replacing IDD), the scanners automatically detect monitor characteristics, including serial numbers - as well as a long list of other new hardware fields.
