Sounds like 1 may have been the data collector.
From CMC, if you right-click your farm name and go to properties, then highlight Zones and expand your zone you will see the server preferences. If it has a blue check and is bold it is the data collector.

Is there not a way to turn off the auto-update part? If you logon in install mode and turn it off, it should turn it off for everyone once back in execute mode.

I use a combination of PRTG and Crannog. I have PRTG up running constantly so I can see if there is a problem. If I see something not right, I will drill down into Crannog to see exactly what and who is eating our bandwidth.
