I know a bit of Java - I was hoping to enhance my learning with Eclipse.
Some of the Eclipse material I have read are very theoretical...I would, hopefully, like to learn practical things from a book. It would be nice if the book can go over an implementation or project :)

Data mining is about data pattern recognition.
Information retrieval is about extracting data from databases - what a user does with the data is up to them.
Normally to perform data mining, you have to start with information retrieval.
