The annex B firmware will not work. As you may notice, the description of the device is - WAG54G Wireless-G ADSL Gateway - which basically means it would only work with ADSL.
How long is the cable between the router and the modem? Is he using the internet/wan port of the router?

Follow what bcastner has suggested. Also mac clone, some modems have MAC filters. Also if you also get 10.xxx.xxx.xxx. It just actually means that your are not authenticated, even though under status it states connected. Usually verizon gives out an ip address of 151.xxx.xxx.xxx, thats your hint...
there is not available firmware update yet for the range expander but I think linksys is cooking up a firmware that would allow the range expander to compatible with WPA
Linksys does not make a 5 port router. 1 port could be an uplink port. Check the model number, if it starts with BEF or WRT, then that is a router. If it starts with EFA or EZXS then that is a switch or a hub.
Can you ping a website or does it say unknown host or could not find host. If so go to DOS and hail "ipconfig/flushdns" and after "ipconfig/registerdns". If that does not work encode the dns on the computer.
