I personally detest real player, as you say, its full of other rubbish you dont want.
I have found a way to play ram files etc without real player! Its called real alternative, google it or use this link...

I would consider using ODBC or OLE drivers to add the iSeries/as400 as a datasource.
You can then use SQL statements.
However when I last did something like this there were certain ODBC drivers that allowed only partial data access, such as read only.
I think IBM do their own ODBC drivers...

The most efficient way of removing sensitive data is to do it in Dedicated service tools.
You can basically "reformat" the disks
I can assure you there is no way of getting it back through any kind of undo or erase tools (possibly with the exception of some internal IBM tools)...
