    Apply .1pt black stoke to text with NONE as the fill. You will need to elaborate more as to the desired transparent background and use so that intelligent response can be made and not guesswork.

    Saving only the Artboard area when Saving as PDF

    If your goal is the artboard only, you can save as step. Withe nothing selected, object>crop area>make. When nothing is selected, the crop area is based upon the artboard dimension and position.

    Removing the graphic styles, symbols and unused swatches while saving as a .ai file will yield the smallest file size.

    This is a known issue with Illustrator CS and the cause is corrupted preferences. Delete your preferences. Shortcut to deleting preferences in CS. Command+Option+Shift (Control+Alt+Shift for Windows) when the application is started. (must be done before the splash screen and answer yes)
