Eureka!! Went into the software forum of this site, and saw a problem that mentioned HAL and the problem with ACPI compliance. By pressing F5 when it asks to Press F6 on th windows setup, i have managed to load XP.

There is no problem with the pc powering back upwhen i hit the rear switch - it turns off as it should do. An it turns back on via the front 'on switch as it should do.it is only the fact that it needs switching off from the power supply burtton at the back which is a problem.
