I cannot argue the logic of why Adobe offers font packaging in InDesign and not in Illustrator - - but Illustrator has had the option to embed or subset fonts in its file formats for years. There is no need to package individual font files.
InDesign only opens files as recent as QuarkXPress 4. If you currently have QuarkXPress 6.5, you can only export down to QuarkXPress 5 format. You'd still be a step away (unless you still have QuarkXPress 5 licenses).

The benefits of upgrading to QuarkXPress 7 is to match the capabilities of InDesign 2 which was release in 2002 and does drop shadows and transparency effects.

Keep in mind that whatever you are running on your G4 is running on code for the PPC processor. While the Intel Mac of today runs circles around a G4, it has to emulate the PPC environment through Rosetta. Sluggish emulation may offset your speed gains...
