The Boson simulator is a great one as well. You can configure routers and switches, there are scenario and stand alone labs, and you can set up your own network the way you want to.
The only drawback is the expense, somewhere around $250 I think.

Firstly doing a sh ip route, ping, and traceroute will only help you to ensure connectivity so no, putting those in will not hurt you (as far as I've been told by a Cisco Instructor).
It definitely is necessary to copy the config to startup though.
I got a copy of the Testking CCNA exams a while ago from a friend. MANY answers were wrong, mistyped, or just plain didn't make sense.

yes bier - you're technically right, but as UKHicks stated, Cisco is still teaching the first and last subnet are non-usable, even in 4th edition books.

also forgot to mention, you may want to ensure all the cabling is good. In switching the lines a cable may have been pinched or gone bad, and CRCs are usually a physical error.
