Thanks to both Tom and Jay for your answers. I did actually try holding down the shift key afer clicking ok on the password prompt, but did not get much joy. In the end I just gave up and went back to what I had done the day before. It took me half a day to get it back to "finished" state but...

Hi Hillary, Thanks for that. I think part of the problem is that I also have the database in a user group so it forces a password to be entered --> I can't hold down the shift key all the time... Thanks for your help though, I'll remember that in future! Justin

OK, It has been years since I've done anything in Access and I had completely forgotten about the dangers associated with this.... Basically I have created an application which I was finally happy with. Being a complete idiot, I went straight into the startup options and turned off all menus...

I'm a rank amature (so ignore what I say) but if you have any blank (Null) fields, access will not return them with wild cards (*, % et al). I've been working through this exact same problem today. Don't know if that helps at all.
