Hi Nebuchednezzar,
Thank you.
I followed your instructions above and logged in as the "oracle" unix user and typed:
chmod 6755 oracle
That did it !!
My "training" unix user did not need to belong to the "dba" group. He still belongs to the "other"...

Hi Mike,
Almost, but not quite yet !!
I am able to RUN sqlplus from my other UNIX account, but I cannot login to the database. (I tried both system/manager and scott/tiger)
It says: "ORACLE UNAVAILABLE".
If I logout of UNIX and login as the "oracle" UNIX user, then I am...
I just installed Oracle 8.1.5 on Solaris 8.
I am able to start sqlplus as scott/tiger only when I am logged into UNIX as the "oracle" user.
When I try to start sqlplus as scott/tiger from my other UNIX account on the same Sun Solaris 8 box, it says: "ORACLE UNAVAILABLE"...
Thank you very much Mike !!
Setting the appropriate ORACLE environment variables (the two you mentioned above) in my other UNIX account worked!!
Thanks,
Irshad
Hi karluk,
Thank you for your resonse.
Yes, the file (sp1us.msb) DOES exist in the
/u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.5/sqlplus/mesg
directory.
I think I have some kind of PATH or permissions problem.
Any body here with some UNIX experience?
Thanks,
Irshad

I am also able to start the database (svrmgrl, lsnrctl) successfully.

Hi,
I know in Microsoft SQL Server we can have multiple "databases" on the same SQL "Server".
Is this possible in Oracle?
I am using Oracle 8.1.5 on Solaris 8.
Thanks, (sorry for the dumb question, I am new to this)

I am installing Oracle 8.1.5 on Solaris 8.
During the middle of the install, a dialog box comes up and says:
liblsm.so not found
I checked and found that I DO have the above file in $ORACLE_HOME/lib
I also have the LD_LIBRARY_PATH properly set.
What might be the problem?
Please help...
PROBLEM FIXED !!
Thank you all for the information.
I fixed the problem by adding the following lines to my /etc/system and then rebooting:
set hme:hme_adv_autoneg_cap=0
set hme:hme_adv_100T4_cap=0
set hme:hme_adv_100fdx_cap=1
set hme:hme_adv_100hdx_cap=0
set hme:hme_adv_10fdx_cap=0...
Thank you everyone for helping with this problem.
I found out the easiest command to shut down the Ultra 5.
Just type in:
poweroff
at the root prompt.
Thanks,
Irshad
How to Power Down my Solaris 8 Ultra 5?
I know I can push the button on the front of the box, but I sealed it off with scotch tape because my 1 and 1/2 year old techno-explorer keeps poking it with his little fingers, to make the green light blink. (Yes, he is somehow able to reach it)
When...
Hi Mike,
If I unplug the cable modem from the router, then there is no concept of "visibility", right? The Solaris box becomes a stand-alone box, and it is cut off from the LAN.
Then, I can only log on to it from the console.
