The tar cvf command with no rewind make different tape files.
For example:
tar cvf /dev/rmt0.1 /home/*
and then
tar cvf /dev/rmt0.1 /usr/*
Will backup /home and /usr in two different tape files.
The first will be /home, and the second /usr.
There is no way to view the files with one...

What type of RS/6000 do u have ?
If your machine is a PCI Hot Plugable, like a 6H1, then u can do it easily.
1)
Remove both interfaces:
rmdev -dl ent0
rmdev -dl ent1
-------------
2)
Remove the slot of the 100b:
drslot -c pci -s <drawer-slot> -r
or
smit devices ->PCI Hot Plug Manager...
Its nothing wrong on it, its an OS policy, but you can change using vmtune.
About the "files" on monitor i can tell that many file I/O operations can lead to situation where very little memory is free. The lack of free memory is caused by that the AIX does not clear memory mapped file...
Depends on two points:
1- Two 7133 towers are much more expensive than 1 tower
2- The performance obtained spreading data between more discs is better then the opposite. I suggest you to buy 10k ou 15k rpm discs. The seektime and latency is better with this discs and with this kind of...

If remote, like NIM, check your name resolution (DNS, hosts, netsvc.conf, resolv.conf, etc )
If local, check the usage of the machine using vmstat, monitor and etc...
