Search Google from address bar

(oops.. should have added: ofcourse HKLM could also work instead of HKCU - just grab whatever you're comfortable with) --- saybibi(); //john #include <stddiscl.h>

    Search Google from address bar

Hi, Best guess is that the URLSearchHooks setting got clobbered (that's the hook that eg. TweakUI uses to define its search prefixes)... just reset [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks] "{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}"="" and it should work again...

    XP indexing services

Hm... indexing service.. - do you by any chance have a lot or large (either will do) ZIP files? by default ZIPfiles are handled transparently as "subdirs"... and the indexing service has been known to create havoc in these circumstances... just as a test, try running: regsvr32 /u...

    MSN Messenger/Windows Messenger

Actually - the idea is just that there *will* be (according to various posts by MVPs in MS newsgroups) a Windows Messenger (for XP) version 5 (w/ the new API), but so far that is not yet ready.. and since outlook express and possebly other programs use Windows Messenger instead of MSN Messenger...

1st XP Machine connected to our network, eventually....

Your 1st message is likely the problem... the machine is trying to download the latest group policies, but that fails, probably by timing out... even might throw in a retry or so, but I don't think so.. Ok - that was the easy part. Now the fun begins: Apparently there is a problem with the...

Having trouble multibooting XP with RedHat

Hm.. let's think - xmnt2002 - wouldn't that be the PowerQuest "batch processor" - to modify locked volumes? When scheduled, that tries to run (like all programs which need full access to active disks) very early in the OSload process.. (the same moment that off-line disk defragmenters...

    "known dangerous" file types

Ok - let's see... you should be able to modify the EditFlags value in the registry: at HKCR\lnkfile there should be a 4 byte binary value EditFlags (sometimes changed into a dword - should not make a difference)... If you were to clear (let me think - this is out of my head) b0 (the least...

    "known dangerous" file types

Hi Turkbear, To start with: kochg asked a simple question; he just got a possible solution for his problem; he didn't ask for a security audit/analyses or whatever... (and besides: blocking files based on extensions is a long shot - mostly overkill, *iff* you use just some plain common sense...

    "known dangerous" file types

Have a look at http://www.slovaktech.com/attachmentoptions.htm - that might be just what you need.. --- saybibi(); //john #include <stddiscl.h>

    Config.msi

config.msi is a (hidden) subdir, usually created at the root of %SystemDrive% (eg. C:\Config.MSI) - here the installer creates backup copies of overwritten / removed files and/or settings during the installation, in order to be able to do a full rollback if the install is aborted (either by the...

Having trouble multibooting XP with RedHat

Just allow writing to removable media (either through policy (looking at your situation, I'd say "Win+R gpedit.msc") Local computer / Windows Settings / Security settings / Local policies / Security Options / Recovery console: allow floppy etc.... Or, assuming no policies: once at the...

    MS-DOS Startup Disk Problems

You could always get a (recent) linux set up- the NTFS file system driver has a experimental write-enable setting.. I tried it a couple of times, and 2 times it worked... (and for the others times: a sector image restored through the net worked wonders).. But this is probably not something you...

    XP newbie questions...

Caro-nz: Could you have a look at the spool location? (Start / Printers and Faxes, and then on an empty spot in the Printers and Faxes window, alternate (usually right) click, and select Server Properties... On the latest tab (advanced) you should see the spool dir mentioned... Does that dir...

Cannot connect to LAN and ISP at the same time

If I recall correctly, there's an option to set the default gateway to the remote (RAS) network.. Otherwise, you could add the necesseary route info manually (just lookup route add).. Although - a local admin works fine? how does that local admin authenticate to the network? If a domain user...
