I'd like to know what the performance impact is to placing views over tables in sybase... we have created a dimensional schema and we are thinking of putting views over each table; how will this affect performance?? is there any drawbacks to placing a view over every table in the database...
your price should be based on your hardware configuration... are you running on unix? how many processors?
are you gearing up for a DEV and UAT environment as well?
Is the quote you gave for the enterprise edition?
Peter
Richard,
so far BO, first impressions of BO are favorable... I'm installing the unix engine this week to run some tests... I like the fact you only have to work with one interface to run and create jobs... it's a great setup.
I like the fact that it has real-time message capability out of the...
Anybody out there using C++ and Java processes as sources in their ETL architecture. If you are can you briefly describe how this works with your particular product?
regards,
Peter
JOHNHERMAN regarding your opinions... they are not valid and that's why I respond to your emails; to clear things up so people who read this don't get side tracked by the inferior ETL and BI technologies that M$ currently has to offer! this isn't a pro-M$ forum... it's a an area for discovery -...
With respect to selecting an ETL tool... you also need to consider the programming resouces that must accompany the tool... given the other tools have been out for many years; there are many programmers available and experienced to use them... IT is a consultant and vendor driven business... the...
I'm glad you posted the link; I'm wondering if you are able to read and understand what you post and base your opinions on... read on I have copied some info from your link:
"The larger vendors — Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, Business Objects — cannot even measure their OLAP business themselves...
ok.. are talking ETL or BI then? there are many types of BI - 5 to be exact... OLAP is but one component of BI - M$ is #1 out ther in OLAP - where did you get this from... other products like Microstrategy, BO and Hyperion Essbase rule the market... BO being the biggest... M$ #1 in BI ....hmmm -...
John,
if you are using vb, c or java it means you have the wrong etl tool... you are wasting valuable time coding in c or java (unless of course your problems is too large for the SQL language to solve from a performance point of view)
All the eggs in one basket... hmmm I think it's a good...
JohnHerman,
your analogy of palm vs MS is wrong! each case of market competition is very specific; you make it seem as if it is generic... you must look at the details... anyways we are getting off topic..
ETL tools are complex, require training and by nature of their product embed themselves...
Ten years out... gosh... that's a huge timeline to look at things... we need to perform now! and in the next 6 months!
That's the wrong approach... buy DTS cause they will get better... I don't think so... you buy what is proven today to achieve your business objectives within the next 6...
ArtieChoke,
thx for the info... I'll make a note to examine this more carefully when BO comes in.
We just had a presentation from Hummingbird ETL... an interesting product!
-Killer interface! - the best I've seen so far... I'll post more on it as I evaluate.
regards,
Peter
ArtieChoke,
thx for the info... writing the joins? I'm trying to figure out what you mean by that... if you are joining tables you are probably creating an SQL statement/result set with constraints to move data to the next step in your transformation... so your saying there is no visual table...
Hey ArtiChoke,
No joins between tables... hmm interesting... what version of Data Integrator were you using... DI is engine based; it's not an sql generator; one of the benefits of DI is that you can specify where the work gets done source our target... refered to as ELT; not many tools have...
INFA is very expensive and it's also got some performance issues; also you need their on site consultants to make things work well... from what I gathered with BO it gives you all the power + real time and simplicity without the price... we are getting it in house soon for eval purposes...
as...
