If you go in the printers properties you should be able to set the printer from spooling printing to print imediately
That should speed things up a bit
Easiest way would be with Partition Magic
You can set what size's you want them to be with no problems and even change them later if you want without loosing data on them

Also make sure you have the 48bitLba patch installed
Without it windows XP will not recignize your hdd proper either
