RH9 support will end in april 30,2004 the 7.x/8.x this month
but if you are using a demo, you wont get any update anymore, did you register, even once your original RH product, the Box of RH9 comes with the support activision key that serves as your token to the support, in RHEL AS3 even you...
Yup, some Promise chips are'nt native supported in linux, ex, in RAID ATA, yun need to do some hacking in the system and kernel, it will work you need to do alot of things (hope i'm wrong to ease).
Linux can manage remotelly using a telnet or ssh, and you can work in a shell, do modifications, reconfigs, and etc. windows needs a 3rd party software such PC Anywhere for remote administrations, thats why they include remote desktops, not ideal for small bandwith, specially dial-up, and Linux...
you configured your dial up in wvdial?, if you can do the command of wvdial script to execute the pppd deamon, then you can exit to shell by putting an "&" to the command. and a -detach option in the /etc/ppp/option
if linux doesnt detect your hard drive!, the cause of it is the SATA Controller, not all sata controller are supported nativelly in linux, maybe in kernel 2.6.0

what distro you are using and version?, most linux will ask you to type the root password or press ctl+d to reboot, you should type the password of root then manual run the fsck utils.
e.g. ( your root )
shell#fsck /dev/hda1 then press enter
note: /dev/hda1 <-- hda is an IDE sda if SCSI
