Have you checked to make sure the power profile isn't allowing the network crad to let the computer go into sleep mode?
It sounds like you need to let the power profile not do anything and see if the problem goes away.
When older machines hard drives go idle for power saving, the requests...
Is this thing toast.
Connecting with a console cable, I get
VxWorks ended with an exception. Attaching to interface ...
it repeats, reboots.
Is there a way to get into the factory config on this at this stage and clear what is there, or it the unit fried beyond use?

Marvin is right on the money. It does all depend on what type of remote access you need.
I install Novell Client on my home PC to authenticate to a remote server (no scripts/drive mappings). Then I connect to the server with Adrem's remote console software.

Rather than uninstall McAfee, try shutting down Arcserver and installing the trial version of backup exec and performing one backup to see if it resolves the problem WITH McAfee running. At least then you'll know if it is McAfee or ArcServe.
I'm assuming Arcserve is running on the server and...
For what it is worth, I've found that using a Traditional Volume with Legacy BTRIEVE applications running on Win2k/XP instead of NSS volumes has made a difference.

What is set by default is that NMAS Authentication is enabled in the client version. There is no need to...
Netware 6 installs NSS volumes by default. Create a Traditional File System volume and out Peachtree there.
I've done this on a Netware 6 SP3 server with all the latest patches (NSS included) and it works like a champ.
