I agree that that ought to be the case. However, the temporary folder setting does not seem to be in the Registry and Windows 98 certainly responds to the system variable set in Autoexec.bat. Just one of those wrinkles of an imperfect system? ::-)

Thanks guys. I think that the problem was the line I had in Autoexec.bat. I entered temp = c:\windows\temp. I now have temp=c:\windows\temp and also the tmp variable set and it works. [medal]

My machine has suddenly started using the c:\windows folder for temporary files instead of c:\windows\temp. How can I revert the temp folder to the default? I have tried setting the system TEMP system variable in AUTOEXEC.BAT but it made no difference. The OS is windows 98se.
