I need to add a couple of parallel ports to a Linux machine, but I'm having a hard time locating a PCI parallel port card that will work with it. The only cards that I could locate had Windows drivers only. Anybody know if a source?
I tend to use a Knoppix Linux CD to test compatability, especially on a laptop. Go to www.knoppix.com, download the latest iso, and burn it on a CD. It can boot directly from the CD, no installation required, and does a great job of detecting devices.
BTW, my main personal machine is an old...
Just download a copy of the Knoppix Linux iso, burn it to a CD, and set your machine to boot from the CD/ROM drive. They can't possibly screw up a read-only CD (just steal it, so keep copies handy).
Also take a look at the Linux Terminal Server project: www.ltsp.org.

It all depends on what you are looking for. There is no open source enterprise class accounting software, as far as I know. But there are some very nice products for the SMB market. LinuxCanada has Quasar, which includes basic accounting and Point of Sale. It is free for the base package, and...
You have what is referred to as a Winmodem. It relies on the Windows OS for it's operation. There is help out there, though, at www.linmodems.org. I've had mixed success getting these things to work under Linux, so I tend to just avoid them if possible, but that's getting harder to do these days...
I think I found the source of the problem.
The backup script is set up to create a compressed archive of each of two data directories into two separate files on the hard drive, then tar them onto the tape drive. Why the files aren't tarred directly to the tape, I don't know.
I happened to...
Thanks for the info. I tried it with several different block size settings as you suggested - no difference. It still dies at the same place with the same error message. Guess it is a bad backup.

I received this message while attempting to restore a group of archived files. Is this caused by a bad backup, or is there something else going on here? It had been compressed prior to being stored on tape. I used tar to copy the comressed file off the tape into a temporary directory...
I need to connect my OpenServer via VPN to a vendor's site and provide 5250 terminal sessions to the unix users to look up information on an AS/400. The Unix users are all on Wyse 60's just to further confuse things. I see that TinyTerm will allow a PC on the system to work OK, but I'm looking...
I have a Windows 2000 SBS server with two 9GB hard drives mirrored. The server provides file and print services for 4 local users and terminal services for one remote user. Of the 9GB storage, a check of the hard drive shows only 2Gb free storage remaining. Will this low of free space start...
I'm really green at this, but I do recall the IT manager mentioning that our VPN uses the LT2P protocol. Is that compatable with the PPTP on Linux client?
Anybody have any suggestions on how I can connect to a Win2K server via VPN? Our company has one already set up for the Windows users in the company and refuse to learn anything about Linux, so whatever solution I find has to be compatable with what's already set up. I'm running mandrake 8.2...
