I am having the same problem where if you try to open the appointment in OWA, its says that the appointment was deleted. I have ran the /freebusy switch with no result.

Click the Advanced Options button and then click the Add-in Manager button.

If you are using an Exchange server, you maybe able to restrict them from sending mail out while still allow for delivery of incoming emails to their inbox. This will prompt them to manage their inbox before it gets too big.

I know that you have found a solution to your problem but for those who are still looking for an answer. Here is a possible solution:
1. Copy the shortcut into a new folder
2. Copy the contents of the folder to where you want to place the shortcut.
