The same error occurs when clicking on the little Adobe ad in the upper right corner "Search Adobe PDF files"
I've check ActiveX and IE's security settings to make sure they're working/set properly.
Have you come up with a solution yet? I'm looking to do the same, except pull from a mySQL database.
My thoughts are to 1) create an fdf file with the data and process it, or 2)use Acrobat's ADBC function to query the database directly.

With Acrobat 5 Full and Reader 6 installed, I could not open a .pdf directly, it had to be saved to disk first, then opening the saved file worked. This is a known bug.
So I upgraded to Acrobat 6 Pro, and then both Pro and Reader would not open .fdf at all, either via the browser or on disk...
