Is it possible you are using logon batches and a user has manually closed the dos box or crashed out, leaving it locked in use??

Found the answer to this. By default you cannot ping the ip address unless you specify add a filter to allow you to. DOH!!

Check the Logon network security - if its set to NT authentication it wont prompt for a logon as it uses the username it was logged onto the domain with. If it set to none it will prompt.
