Another options is a usb box. You mount your 2.5" laptopdrive and hook it up your system through an usb port.
The box is more expensive, say $50-60 (usb1.1) but you don't have to open up your computer. Windows XP reconises the drive and you handle like any other drive.

If you know for sure that the pcb is defect, you can replace it and still read your data. If the platters or head and arms are defect or you have a scratch on the platter you will have trouble recovering your data!

Windows is multitasking. This is something you don't want when formatting or partitioning...
Even when you give the command from within windows, windows will disable multitasking
If your system doesn't boot up there might be a hidden partition (partition magic or ghost) It contains boot up info.
If so hook up both drives and copy the hidden partion, install your OS and go.
remove a hdd and see what happens.....
Also when your systems boots up your scsi adapter will inform you which drive letter it assign, at least with an Adaptec.
You can access your scsi card at boottime time, look at the screen. It should have diagnostics.

2. remove both hdd
3. install the 15G as master
4. install your OS...

D stands for drive
GH is a name
S stands for scsi.
If the last letter is and A then you have an ide drive.
On the drive you will find an number like: 2 digits, 1 character and 4 digits (ie: FRU pn. 59H6926 is a 9.1 GB

Did you hook up an internal scsi drive, the famous T split error! Also did you check termination? What kind of termination do you use: active or passive?

1. take a bigger screw driver and put the tip somewhere on the hdd and listen carefully.
2.pcb stands for printed circuit board. It is the green colored electronics boards on one side of your hdd. You will also find the connector on it which connect your hdd to your laptop.

if you power on the hdd and you place a screwdriver with the tipe on the hdd, don't touch the electronics!, and the other end on your ear, can you hear spinning the platters up and the movement of the arm? some little noise?
