It requires a proprietary service from 3Com to download the firmware.
They do have versions that run on Linux (Asterisk deivice modified by 3Com, and their VCX line of servers.) but good luck getting that to run on anything else...
Setup a User that does not have a phone. Its called a "Phantom Mailbox"
Have the AA single digit dial the users extension.
Then you can map a button users phones for a "MWI" (message waiting indicator" for that extension.

What software version are you running on the NBX?
The device that you are connecting should be connected with a MONO cable and should be connected to a jack that outputs at LINE level, NOT a headphone jack.
The NBX expects audio in at line level not at a variable level produced by headphone jacks.
